How to make your Local IP Address static - Win 10

Your Local IP Address will change from time to time. This is the address that the router uses when it sends the data to your PC on the local network. So this is not the address that your router has when it connects to the internet.
To host reliably with many routers, you will need to make this address fixed and unchanging. This is a tutorial of how this is done with Windows 10. The procedure is similar with other versions of Windows.

First you need to find some information about your IP Address and do do that you need to open a window with the Command Prompt.

Tyore 'cmd' into the search window near the Windows icon, bottom left of screen and select the 'Command Prompt' option.

In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig /all

Note there is a space between the word ipconfig and the '/' character

Under the Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection heading, make a record of the following information:

*IPv4 Address

*Subnet Mask

*Default Gateway

*DNS Servers - sometimes there are two of these and you need both addresses if this is the case.

Now we will make the Local IP Adress of the computer static.

In the Windows Settings, select 'Network & Internet'

This takes you to the Network Status where you click 'Change Adaptor Options'

Now Right-Click on the icon of the Local Area Connection which is active and select 'Properties' from the drop-down menu.

Select in oder to highlight 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' and then click Properties.

Now activate the button for  ‘Use the following IP Address' and put the information that you obtained with ipconfig into the boxes.

Do the same for the one or two DNS servers.

Click 'OK' and you are done.

If you have made a mistake, your internet connection will be lost. In this case, simply return to this window and re-activate the buttons for 'Obtain an IP Adress Automatically'.
